49ers 21 Bengals 3

Joe Montana tossed two touchdown passes and ran for another as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 21-3 at Riverfront Stadium as what could have been a Super Bowl preview. Montana opened the scoring with a four yard touchdown pass to Bill Ring. As the game moved to the second quarter, the Bengals cut the deficit to 7-3 on a 30 yard Jim Breech field goal. Montana hit Dwight Clark with a 15 yard touchdown pass before halftime and the 49ers took a 14-3 lead into the break. The Bengals lost starting quarterback Kenny Anderson and replaced him with Jack Thompson. After a scoreless third quarter, Montana capped the scoring with a one yard run giving the 49ers a 21-3 lead which would hold for the final score as well. Montana completed 23 of 36 for 187 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. For the Bengals, Anderson was 11 of 20 for 97 yards and threw two interceptions. Thompson finished 10 of 18 for 114 yards with one interception.
